Volkswagon Teddy Bear!!!

I came across this interesting Volkswagen advertisement. It was a very funny add because of its novelty and because it used a little boy with a teddy bear to advertise a car. This add used the 3 methods of persuasion quiet effectively, thus making it a convincing ad.

The advertisement uses pathos because it portrays a little child and a teddy bear. Both are particularly appealing to most individuals . both relate to children , something that attracts attention, it also appeals to most peoples emotional side. Most people would look at the add and go ‘aww how cute’.

There is a distinct novelty in viewing a teddy bear bigger as big as a house. This further attracts attention.

The add also uses a certain amount of logos. By portraying the traditional house in the background, with the mail box and manicured front lawn, along with the little boy, the add indicates that the car is appropriate for families. It immediately attracts the attention of anyone wishing to purchase a family car.

However one of its drawbacks is that the add does not give any real information about the car. It does not even portray an image of the whole car, thus failing to give viewers a definite idea of what the car looks like.

Ethos is used simply by portraying the brand name; Volkswagen is a well known and popular brand, something which automatically lends the ad credibility. Furthermore Volkswagens are often associated with being a ‘family car’.

All is all, this was a very interesting add.

What do you think?

  1. not giving info about their product is not a drawback ... it is well-planned marketing move to invoke curiosity from target audience and a chance to create a commitment when they walk into the showrooms to enquire more ... and flashing prices are for cheap products ... the expensive price tag of VW might put some customers off immediately. ...

  2. I think advertising is more about capturing the attention of the audience instead of the spec of the car it self. If they want the spec they can go to the dealer.

  3. adds dont necessarily need to portray information about their products. Visuals are very important and messages that u interpret from them as well. Overall, i think this is a very productive ad that caters to the needs of both young and old consumers.

  5. In reference with what "thongster" noted, ads today do not necessarily need to portray information about their products...which often brings up the question...Why advertise then???

If I saw this advertisement, being totally ignorant about car brands, I'd find it very difficult to link it with a car or for that matter Volkswagen....

Hence I feel that this ad caters to just select sect of people...

  6. the ad is made in a sneaky way and it is also important that it conveys a message to the consumers, which i think it does. showing a boy with a teddy bear clearly indicates that its a family car. The specification of the car can be found when the consumer goes to the showroom. The ad used the brand goodwill pretty well in a different manner. Any family person would be interested in buying that car as speed wouldn't matter to him. Using a little boy with a teddy bear is a good idea to attract a family in pursuing to buy the car.

  7. The point of the huge bear pulled by the kid is to suggest that the trunk of the car can fit something as large as the massive teddy bear, as suggested by the open trunk. That is what the ad is intending to convey to the audience; us.

  8. I think volkswagon is very brave to use almost 90% ad space on just an image.

  9. Definitely comes across as a family car. I think it was a very good idea to show the car partly - intriguing and revealing at the same time.

  10. very interesting, and ya I think because of a child present in the ad itself, it comes across as a family car, very different take to marketing i think.

  11. This ad is eye-catching and definitely effective to its catered market. Since this brand has built up its reputation among its users, the ad is more credible.
However, for people who are not familiar with the brand, they might think this ad is exaggerating its product.

  12. i agree with what you have to say, about providing visuals. i think that the ad should have included a larger portion of the car, showing the entire car. i would definitely want to know how a car looks like before deciding whether or not i wanna buy it. my 2 cents worth. =)

  13. I guess volkswagen being a German company would have some effect on its advertisement. as it is known that the Germans have a low context culture, whereby there is less extensive use of similar experience to communicate and more of words of verbalization. hence the use of just the picture only to illustrate that the car has a big boot to store the bear. in short the picture explains it all would suit the style of communication of the Germans

  14. The ad is awesome.

It lends a 'kid-friendly' air to the VW image, further pulling the people on the market for a family car.

  15. cute ad. are they saying the car is so spacious that the whole teddy would be able to fit into the car?
i like how u analyzed the house, the lawn, the letterbox; that it's part of the family image Volks is trying to sell.
i know i would take a second look!
